I have a bad knee and I find the elliptical machine extremely hard to use. I think you should try one out at a local gym before buying one.

your correct… it is easier on the knees… minimal impact. I am a runner so i use it for cross training when my knees are sore.
I hate to not answer your question but you really have to find something that works for YOU. Try out a couple at a local gym or visit a fitness equipment store.
I too have bad knees from years of volleyball and track and I can only work out on an elliptical. It is very low impact and works great. I have used two kinds, LifeFitness (it could be Lifetime Fitness, I cant remember) and Precor. I like both. They can be rather pricey, but I Precor is wonderful. I have one that tracks your heart rate, great for cardio and fat burning, and varying programs, such as hill, cardio, random, etc. But I would recommend trying a few out at a fitness sales store…I have been on a few that were pathetic…good luck!
It depends on what you mean by bad knees? For some people the elliptical is the answer, for others it can worsen the condition because of the shearing force exherted on the knee joint.
Your orthopedic doctor would be the best person to ask. If you do not have an ortho doc the odds are you don’t have any serious knee problems and the elliptical will be fine for you.
An elliptical is something you definetly need to try out for an extended period of time in order to get a good feel. The elliptical is certainly not going to benefit your kness, it will not build strength, it is merely cardiovascular exercise.
Your best bet is to visit a local specialty fitness equipment store and try out brands like LifeFitness, Precor, Spirit, SportsArt and True ellipticals
