Losing weight?

I want to lose at least 50 pounds, probably more like 70, but I have no idea where to start. Any tips? Also, how do you when you’re not losing or gaining weight right? How do you when to ask the doctor if something’s wrong? For example, I gained 30 pounds in the last month and nothing has changed…if anything I’ve been eating better then I was the months prior…is that normal? My bf thinks I should go see a GI doctor or something bc he says my metabolism sucks, but how do you tell when its a medical problem?
