How AND where do you get motivation to exercise?

Logically I KNOW that exercise is good for my body and mood. There is no dispute over that fact. I cannot simply will myself to exercise — that just doesn’t work for me. Contrary to the popular Nike ad "Just Do It" doesn’t work.
I am thinking of going to hypnotherapy to help me want to exercise. What do you think about using hypnotherapy to create motivation for exercising?
@ Belle – LOL! : ) "Walking to hypnotherapy" — that really made me smile.

… you’ve hit the nail on the head !
motivation is the hardest part
I’ve gone on hikes for 2 weeks in a row now (and body aches and pains, not unexpectredly)
have heard that "walking" is close to the most ideal exercise… heard the 3 or 4 times a weeek
of 45 minutes walking will satisfy most exercise requirements
"hypnotherapy" …. hmmm, tricky stuff. I studied it a while waaaay back in the day\and think that "the potential is there"… actually *implementing that potential* , I confess to not being very sure.
go on hikes with friend(s) if it’s a do-able thing … go places you like
If you find a way that works for you, please let me know
you could try "self-hypnosis" ?
A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step … then a second, then a third ….
Maybe you could try setting your ‘sights a bit lower’ and looking at achievable goals for your lifestyle? Hynotherapy may work, … try walking to to the therapy session….
an Anthony Robbins or Paul McKenna book with have motivational techniques that will work.
worth a try. a book is alot cheaper than a session of hypnotherapy. but if you want hypnotherapy. give it a try.
just do it works if you’ve got a goal. even imagining the simple goal of feeling better thru exercise should do it. when you get hypnotized you are just going to use your imagination to influence your unconscious. exact same thing that imagining will do right now.
Firstly I want to say that it has been shown time and time again that hypnotherapy is a hit or a miss… leaning towards a tendency to miss. The chances for it to "create motivation" are even less likely.
Secondly it sounds to me that you just want to be "active". And normally that doesn’t take motivation as much as it takes the knowledge of just knowing what you physically enjoy. What you physically enjoy can be so many different things, the gym isn’t for everyone. Try running around your neighborhood taking a swim, some community sport, riding a bike. It’s hard for a person to get up early in the morning to run if it isn’t directly something they love or if it doesn’t positively help something they do love.
Don’t seek motivation, seek what you enjoy, because there you will naturally have an unrevealed surplus of motivation!!
I run three times a week and take aikido classes three times a week. Very often, I don’t have the motivation to work out. I get up and go, and often, the exercise is just as much in overcoming my own laziness as it is in tromping around the track or in rolling around the mat.
So for me, it’s a practice in mindfulness. I know that if I don’t overcome laziness in something as simple as a half-hour run, how can I overcome it when a real challenge comes up? So I think of it as character-building as much as body building. It’s not just about the body–it’s about the mind as well.
But sometimes that’s not enough. Now, I really love animals. I like interacting with them, caring for them, etc. So going to the park gives me the opportunity to feed cats and squirrels. And since I’m there, anyway, it’s such a lovely track, and it’s nice under the trees….next thing I know, I’ve ran a couple of miles, and I have a troupe of squirrels following me around the track.
The others are right. It’s all about what you like. If I had to run on a treadmill, I can’t do it consistently. I don’t like being indoors. But during the spring, summer, and fall months, all I do is run. I enjoy being outside that much. Running is the excuse I use to go outside and go "play in the woods" like I used to as a kid.
Hi Upside Down Kitty,
I’ve gotten fluffy around the paunch & started exercising since the New Years. It really is a matter of discipline and dedication. I don’t feel motivated to work out but I do it. After I do it, I feel better about myself and realize I did good. Truthfully, I wouldn’t waste your money on hypnotherapy. I’d just join a gym, dedicated either MWF or T/TH after work for half an hour and commit to it. Once you get used to doing it, it will become routine.
Also, as an older cat, I’m finding that losing weight is taking more time than I hoped. I’m staying focused on health & not the scale.
Hope that was helpful.
